Preface

This publication was written on the basis of research work at the Academy of Computer Science and Management in years 2000-2003. The first step consisted in  developing appropriate data structures for the semantic network representation, followed by the analysis of the functionality of the intelligent agent. The next step combined the theory of graphs with the basis of recursions in order to lay ground for the semantic network structure and the recurrent algorithms of an intelligent agent. Finally, further refinements to the concept were added.

First part of the book contains broad characterization of concepts and theory applied to semantic networks. Importance of semantic networks is significant in modern world with increasing levels of complexity and unexpected developments such as natural disasters, terrorist activities and explosion of world wide networks. All fundamental concepts have been been characterized providing good background for specific algorithms developed in the second part of the book. Author discusses planning, grouping time and space, focusing on semantic network algorithms. The material covered presents a good foundation to develop solutions based on semantic networks approach.

Semantic network presented in this book is a hybrid expert system integrating such tools of artificial intelligence as semantic networks, rule-based expert systems and elements of language theory. Unique structure of the network, its placement in time and space and organization makes it an intelligent operating system. Presented concepts appear to be useful in local systems based on artificial intelligence as well as wide area computer networks, maintaining intelligent platform for information exchange. Such platform, thanks to uniform semantics, can be equally adaptive to human and machine operating systems.

Todays world has to meet challenges created by unique problems that mean not having a specific action plan. Artificial intelligence system presented in this book maybe some day will help humans in this very difficult undertaking.
